as well as a quick blurb about the new 'nickies': http://www.tablehopper.com/2007/06/lush-nickies.html

"In the Lower Haight, ~BAGHDAD 1,001 NIGHTS~, an Iraqi restaurant, is opening August 1, just next door to Zuzu Petals. The owner of the building, Husain Nasir, has dreamed for the past 12 years of having his own place that would serve Iraqi-style Arabic cuisine, so he’s beyond excited. The chef is coming from Iraq, and will be preparing authentic dishes like biryani and one called snobar with lamb, pine nuts, and walnuts, plus okra with lamb and tomato sauce. Many dishes will come from the tandoori, including some naan breads. The two-level will have 49 seats. It’s meant to be spacious, comfy, and casual, with an exotic and colorful look. Dinner to start, with lunch later on. Beer and wine will be available. And expect some belly dancing shows. 682 Haight St. at Pierce.

More changes in the 94117: ~LE MÉTRO CAFÉ~ on Divisadero served their last Frenchie dinner on Sunday night, June 10. They are closing for a (hoped-for) two weeks, and when they reopen, according to my source, it will be called Kathmandu, serving small plates of Nepalese food for $10 and under, with plans to stay open late, until 1am. (Owner Roshan and his wife Sharadha are from Nepal.) I see some future confusion with the tiny family-run Kathmandu Café, just a few blocks away, on Fulton and Divis. 311 Divisadero St. at Page, 415-552-0903.

Another dueling business arrangement on Divisadero will be happening when a ~yet-unnamed Texas-style BBQ joint~ opens on Divisadero at McAllister, just two blocks away from Lilly’s-Bar-B-Que (formerly known as Brother-In-Laws, AKA the pit that I can smell from my apartment when the wind is right). I have to say, my mouth began to water when I started hearing the line-up: slooooooow-smoked brisket, pork ribs, chicken, and links made by someone specially chosen for the task, so the casing will be less tough/more refined. There will be 20 seats, with a long banquette and tables—the space is being designed by Architects II (who also recently did Mexico DF—more on that in a sec). The project is from Regional Burrell and Al Bourges, friends who met playing racquetball some 20 years ago. Beer and wine will be served, and the plan is to be able to phone/fax in orders for take-out. Opening is slated for September. 853 Divisadero St. at McAllister."

hello neighbors!!
I'm putting together a band to tour in the Fall for a record being released on August 28th. I'm primarily looking for people that are multi-instrumentalist, flexible and not afraid to sing. The music has drums, and usually an assortment of bass, guitar and keys, and a lot of singing and harmonies. At this point I'm still meeting people and seeing what makes the most sense.

Here is a link to the music:
http://www.myspace.com/nlannon

These are songs mostly from my last album. The new stuff has more live drums (but still has a lot of electronics as well) and is a little more rocking.

Drop me a line if you are interested and - please - only if you're seriously able to tour.
My email is nyleslannon@yahoo.com

This is my 2nd solo album. I recently left the band Film School if that might ring any bells out there!

Thanks....
Also, I maintain an interest in trying to form some kind of rock band, so if you're looking for a guitar player, songwriter, and singer who has a certain "not very good at it" about him, please drop me a line.

Cheers!

2 shot, one fatally, in SF
Marisa Lagos, Chronicle Staff Writer

Monday, February 12, 2007

(02-12) 11:16 PST -- A violent San Francisco weekend spilled into Monday morning, when two people were shot, one fatally.

One man was found shot on the sidewalk at Haight and Fillmore streets around 2 a.m., said Northern Station Lt. William Canning.

About 15 minutes later, Canning said, another man was shot in his car at Grove and Baker streets.

The victim, identified by the Medical Examiner's office as Tony McDougal, 33, of San Francisco, then drove to Fillmore and Haight streets -- where police were still on-scene investigating the previous shooting -- and crashed into a bus shelter.

The man was transported to the hospital, where he died from his wounds, Canning said.

Today's shootings came after two people were shot on Sunday in the Western Addition.

Anthony Hunter Jr., 24, was shot and killed around 10:15 a.m. as he cleaned out a minivan parked on Eddy Street at the Yerba Buena Plaza East housing development, where he lived. Police said two men approached Hunter on foot, and one or both opened fire.

The second shooting occurred at 12:40 p.m. about five blocks away and injured a teenage girl.

In that shooting, a Honda Civic with three people inside pulled up alongside the victim, a 13-year-old girl, and her friends, who were outside the privately owned Ammel Park townhomes on Grove Street. Words were exchanged between the people in the car and the teens, and someone got out of the car and started shooting, police said.

Two young men were shot in the head and killed early Sunday morning after a brief argument in San Francisco's Lower Haight neighborhood, police said, becoming the city's 10th and 11th homicide victims in 2007.

Tony Hunt, 20, of San Francisco, and Yusef Campbell, whose age and residence could not immediately be determined, were pronounced dead on the sidewalk where they fell just after midnight on the 400 block of Haight Street.

Hunt and Campbell had argued with two men who pulled up in a car, said San Francisco police Sgt. Neville Gittens. One of the men got out, walked up to the victims, shot them and got back in the car, which drove away, Gittens said.

The shooting occurred in front of a three-story apartment building and across from a popular nightclub, Underground SF, which was packed at the time.

A neighbor reported hearing two gunshots, and, Gittens said, a sedan was seen driving away from the shooting, heading north on Fillmore Street.

Within 20 minutes, police found a rented gray Chevrolet Malibu with a warm engine abandoned near Eddy and Pierce streets, about 10 blocks north of the shooting scene, a law enforcement source said.

The car was similar to the one described at the shooting, and investigators were trying to determine whether it was linked to the slayings, the source said.

The source, who asked not to be identified, said there had been animosity in the past between drug dealers who operate in the Lower Haight and those who operate near Eddy and Pierce streets.

A person who identified herself as Tony Hunt's sister told The Chronicle in an e-mail Sunday evening that Hunt was not involved in drug dealing and lived in Hunters Point.

Gittens said investigators need witnesses to help them solve the case. Anyone with information can call the department's tip line at (415) 575-4444.

"We know there were plenty of people out there," he said. "The street was crowded, so we're appealing to whoever was out there to call."

The block has restaurants, two medical marijuana dispensaries and stores that sell furniture, bikes, candles and bongs.

A reporter who pulled up to the block at 10 a.m. Sunday was immediately asked if he wanted to buy drugs as a teenage boy rolled a joint in plain sight on a car hood.

Two men in their 30s, who arrived to retrieve their car, a Toyota Matrix spattered with blood from the shooting, said they had been partying at Underground SF and had been forced to leave their car because of police blockades.

"Usually (killings) are confined to certain areas of the city. I think it's spreading out a little more," said one of the men, both of whom declined to give their names. "It's weird. You don't see it" -- street violence -- "until it's right in front of you."

A 36-year-old man who lives in an apartment above the shooting scene said the neighborhood was "usually all right. There's the occasional crackhead and what not, but it's a good place to live. There are a lot of nice people."

I was there from late 93 - late 95, lots of stories. Apt mgr James accused me of smoking crack when he found a tiny baggie (which had housed a nosering!) in my apt. Always wondered what happened to the couple with the redheaded baby, etc.

Those of you living in the Lower Haight might have had some trouble getting your Wal-tussin on Saturday -- an emotionally-disturbed customer tried to set the Walgreens on fire by spraying lighter fluid on the newspapers and teddy bears and lighting a match, after waving a set of reindeer antlers menacingly at the pharmacist and attempting to jump behind the counter. The cops subdued the man with beanbags (since guns might have worsened the fire). Meth, man, it messes you up.

Fire bug evacuates drug store
Suspect subdued with beanbag gun.

http://www.examiner.com/article/index.cfm/i/122004n_drugstore

A Haight Street Walgreens store was bizarrely disrupted Saturday when a customer allegedly doused himself and merchandise with lighter fluid and set fire to newspapers and Christmas teddy bears, police said.

Stunned shoppers were evacuated and the episode came to a dramatic climax around 11:30 a.m. when Ian Latinette, 29, allegedly sprayed lighter fluid through a lighter as a kind of flamethrower and charged at police officers, who were soaked in the flammable liquid. Police subdued him with a beanbag gun, said Lt. Sharon Ferrigno of Northern District station.

"This was crazy. They were really concerned he was going to ignite the store, them included," said Ferrigno.

Latinette is charged with three counts of attempted homicide, battery by gassing and arson offenses after the standoff at the store at 499 Haight St. Firefighters extinguished a small fire and took Latinette to San Francisco General Hospital for evaluation, said Fire Department Lt. Tomie Kato.

Police are unsure why Latinette, a semi-regular customer who had not posed problems before, began his tirade. While in the store he suddenly began ranting and waving a pair of reindeer antlers at pharmacist Rachel Smith before jumping over the prescriptions counter, Ferrigno said.

Smith yelled for help and fled, while manager Ken Chan evacuated the 15 customers and staff and locked Latinette inside the store alone. Latinette then allegedly poured lighter fluid on his own head and on teddy bears and candy and used a lighter to set fire to a newspaper rack and carpeted area.

Police officers Matt Inocencio, Malcolm Anderson and Sgt. Greg Yee entered the store to arrest Latinette, slipping and sliding through the lighter fluid "like at an ice-skating rink," Ferrigno said.

Mindful of the thick fumes in the air, police used beanbag guns rather than risk using their guns and having the small store ignite and spread to the apartments above.

###

All that... and i live above walgreen's... quite glad my place didn't start aflame.

Cheers! :) fun

In the last few weeks I have noticed there is a handful of people making all this noise about problems caused by the Vapor Room on Haight Street. Claims that it causes traffic, noise and crime due to second-hand drug dealing. Now, occasionally I have noticed the aroma, but I walk by the Vapor Room at least once a day and have never noticed any of these alleged problems.

Has anyone else seen a problem with the Vapor Room? It seems that newly formed neighborhood association of busybodies has taken aim at the Vapor Room as their first target. I suspect their real agenda is to attack any business that does not enhance the value of their real estate and the amount of rent they can charge.

Personally I am ambivalent about the Vapor Room, but I am concerned about where this campaign is going. It takes me back to an incident in 1998 - I heard of a group of entitled home owners on Steiner between Haight and Waller who actually got a lawyer to go after Hairdoo Voodoo on Waller because they didn't like the red light bulb they left on at night in their salon. The person behind this has since left the neighborhood, but he bragged about this effort as some great accomplishment to improve the neighborhood.

They were asking him if he had a laptop in there. He said no and walked on. Another guy walked by with a laptop bag and then they started harassing him. He crossed the street, in exactly the wrong direction (he headed right in to the heart of their group). They were really bugging him, but I'm not sure they had the power to jump him. At this point I was starting to get out of range so I couldn't really tell what happened. Hopefully, he is ok and the kids got bored and left him alone.

It's not a good sign that the young kids are heading towards violence and thievery like that. It reminded me of the brutality of that gang of kids 'The Runts' in the movie 'The City of God'.

Inspecting the old one, yep.....someone knifed it. Why in the heck someone would do this, I have no idea?? Granted it was parked near the projects, but I've parked there hundreds of times before. Random destruction of property I guess....sux though....I had to go out and buy a new tire, and it wasn't cheap.

I am starting an informal group in San Francisco. The group will be for web design professionals - ranging from just starting out at their first job to professionals with many years of experience. I would prefer to keep the participants to people who are not starting out with one of their first designs as a side-hobby. No offense! I've certainly been there! I'm just going for a overall feel and tone. The group will meet informally, at time intervals that seem to suite everyone best - maybe once a month or every three weeks. People don't have to come to all the meetings. Meeting would be held in either the lower haight area or in the mission district, preferably in the evening over a cup of coffee or glass of wine. I'd love to do the meetings at Cafe Du Soleil on Fillmore near Haight.

The meetings woudl consist of viewing one piece of work from different people and giving honest assesments and suggestions. Agendas could be set ahead of time if people want so that everyone gets a turn.
On April 6 Chicago Mercantile Exchange Holdings Inc. (CME) and NYMEX

Howdy Neighbors-

I wanted to alert you all to a rash of car break-ins during the last couple of weeks. The criminal seems to be using some type of slim jim thingy and is thankfully not breaking the windows (although I have seen some broken glass on the ground). The three break-ins that I am aware of occured near waller/fillmore and haight/ fillmore. Don't leave stuff in your car. Who ever is doing it is not very bright and is stealing things that have very little resale value and use.

For the second time this week, I've had people tell me that they've been sitting at the coffee shops on Waller St and someone has literally run by and ripped their laptop or cell phone out of their hands and kept on running. I've also read that laptop thefts in coffee shops are up as well in SF. I was also talking with Alex (owner of the Metro Cafe) and he said he's noticed a lot more crazy thefts lately. So much so that the various shop owners are thinking of hiring private security to patrol the area.

Just a FYI. This certainly isn't proof that crime is on the rise but as always be aware when sitting outside with your belongings.

Two men robbed four different victims within 10 minutes in San Francisco Tuesday night.

The men were operating in the Hayes Valley area around 9 p.m. and are still at large, according to San Francisco Police Lt. John Loftus, of the department's robbery division. The four muggings took place within a three-block square between Octavia, Webster, Haight and Fell streets, leading police to believe the suspects were on foot.

One suspect is described as a Latino man, about 5 feet 8 inches to five feet 10 inches tall and armed with a knife. The other is black, about 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet tall and armed with a gun, Loftus said.

The robberies are not considered a gang activity. "They're in it for the money, though they're not getting too much,'' Loftus said. The robbers took about $20 to $40 from each of their victims.

Police do not have evidence that suggests the two men have committed any other robberies, Loftus said, "though it's certainly possible.''

Loftus advised residents of the neighborhood to be safe and sensible when traveling at night. Avoid walking alone if possible and don't display items that a robber might be interested in, like iPod headphones, Loftus said. He also said pedestrians should trust their gut and avoid trouble.

"If you see something suspicious or you're alerted on something take evasive action,'' Loftus said. Pedestrians should walk the other way or go into a business or other safe place if they think they see the suspected robbers.

couple of sad sights in LH tonight; thought i'd share em and purge the demons...

i was walking down to cafe international for a little internet and jazz; just a regular sunday. first oddity- a building on steiner and oak that looks like it's become the latest front in the tagging wars. an otherwise non-descript victorian apartment building, not recently painted or anything, with its corner completely covered in tags. a few folks that looked like residents were loitering out front looking at their building. made me sad.

i kinda shook that off, though i wondered what would make that one spot suddenly popular (even one of the windows was hit), and proceeded to haight.

upon turning the corner, i was confronted with a fight in progress outside that bar two doors up from steiner street. OK, no biggie, just a bar fight; lots of people standing around watching or involved. it was broken up pretty quickly , and the guy who seemed to have gotten the worst of it was pulled around to the streetside of a car parked in front. next thing, this Big Guy who was just walking up the block walks around, pushes the beat up guy against the car and pulls the guy's wallet right out of his pocket! he let him go and kept walking; i'm pretty sure i'm the only one who was looking in the right place to see it happen. and the fight guy was too dazed to realize that anything had happened at all.

that shit just aint right.
