did anyone just hear the gunshots? I think someone unloaded a revolver. I didn't count precisely, but it sounded like six shots. it was quickly followed by police sirens. it probably just happened down the block from me. I'm on Page, and I am guessing that it happened at Page and Webster.

it was about 6 shots yeah, on Fillmore between Oak and Fell, right in front of my house, as I was walking my bike on the sidewalk. There was a big RV parked in between me and the maroon SUV that fired them. It careened down Fillmore towards Haight, followed about 15sec later by two squad cars. <fingers crossed>

And all I could think of was the 10yo kid in Oakland who was paralyzed by stray gunfire at his piano lesson last week. This is the second time I've been feet away from a driveby, and all I can think to do is stand there. I guess I should start dropping to the ground just to be safe... I might look like a loon, but at least I wouldn't be shot.

ok, get this, I just walked out of my apartment to find out what happened and there was a kid standing on the corner, and a maroon SUV drove by and picked him up. returning to the scene of the crime perhaps? A cop car was parked with lights on directly on the other side of the street (I don't think anyone was in it). apparently it was the target's lucky night, b/c the assailants missed and hit a car.

yeah, stephanie I would say go ahead and drop to the ground and get behind something thick, like a car or a concrete wall. protect yourself. glad you are alright.

shit, i wonder if it was the same car. I just filled out a statement describing what I saw. Go tell the cops that you saw the car come back perhaps? Our entire block is still taped off with half a dozen cops around at least.

am SO glad no one was hurt!
Definitely hit the ground! Once while living in Hayes Valley in '90-'91 I took my lil bean to the playground. I noticed most kids had no parent with them there. Heard a couple of pops, grabbed my kid and some others and dove into the sand. A man got shot pointblank in the parking lot twenty feet from us!

a letter written by Wendy at Page and Fillmore to the Fog City Journal about the incident says

"As a matter of fact, one of those bullets came through the wall of my home, whizzed past my elbow and landed on my floor.
I want people to know what’s going on here in the Lower Haight. I have lived here for 17-years and the amount of violence in this neighborhood is out of control and under reported."

Damn straight. How do we act to rid our neighborhood of this increasing violence? Will it actually take the shooting of an innocent (non-black) bystander resident before this problem gets the attention it needs to be stopped????

actually, there's already been instances of non-black bystanders being shot. there was a shooting on the 4th of july in 2006 where some random girl was shot once or twice in the leg [?] on the corner of haight and webster. and about a year before that, a guy i know was shot in the hand by a stray bullet at haight and fillmore. both white. both totally uninvolved. that pretty much made it clear that the police definitely don't care about the race of the victim, and they're not going to start caring just because someone is white. in fact, they most likely consider it an occupational hazard to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. you know, it's your fault for being there if you get hit.

do i think that the sfpd cares about whether the violence is getting out of hand, but i think it's just gotten so out of hand that they've adopted a closed-door policy on the matter in order to keep from alarming the public. what they don't realize is that their being so quiet is what's most alarming about the whole situation.
