howdy LHers,
i'm (once again) considering getting rid of my car... does anyone use the car sharing services that park their cars in the lot on steiner and page ? i'm wondering how available the cars generally are from that lot.
i'm also curious to know if anyone knows which of the companies has cars in that lot, and if there's another depot within striking distance of alamo square park that i should know about...

Re: car sharing, anyone?
Wed, September 27, 2006 - 3:29 PMThat is Zip Car. I believe they have several depot locations in Lower Haight area. I've seen parking space(s) at the 76 Station on Market (by the Safeway) as well as that one on Page street. I've seen another location in the area, but I can't recall exactly where that was.

Re: car sharing, anyone?
Wed, September 27, 2006 - 9:30 PMzipcar does not have cars in that lot, it is a city car share lot. nearest zipcar is at fell and divis.
i use the city car share lot, since it is right next door to my house. you can generally get a car if you plan a day in advance, but sometimes you can get lucky and find one available same day. there is also a city car share lot at california pacific medical center on duboce, which has more cars, so that is another resource. -

Re: car sharing, anyone?
Sat, September 30, 2006 - 7:29 PMDon't forget the City Car Share lot at Gough and Grove. Definitely striking distance from Alamo Sq. It's a ten-minute walk; I pass by every morning and evening on the way to work and there are always cars parked there.
My downstairs neighbors joined the car share and love it. They now drive once every couple of weeks for groceries, etc. and even do small out-of-town excursions, which they never used to do. Car sharing is a good thing! Go for it! -

Re: car sharing, anyone?
Fri, October 6, 2006 - 3:07 PMYou don't even have to go all the way to gough st. If you are at Alamo Square, there are closer places at Paige and Stiener, or at Davies medical.

Thu, September 28, 2006 - 7:33 AMI love zipcar.
A major difference between city car share and zipcar is the pricing structure - check them both out. For me zipcar works best, but for some people it is city car share.

Re: car sharing, anyone?
Thu, September 28, 2006 - 9:55 AMyeah, i've been looking at pricing. for location, the choice does seem to be between citycarshare and zipcar for me. but figuring the pricing is kinda crazy - almost as bad as trying to choose the best cell phone plan 5 years ago.
i think my key concern is whether or not i can get a car on pretty short notice, since i'm LOUSY at planning ahead. but on the flip side, i've found myself driving less and less anyway, so maybe it's not as big a deal.
i've also been considering getting a scooter, which could make it a lot easier to wait for a car to be available.
so many possibilities.... -

Re: car sharing, anyone?
Thu, September 28, 2006 - 1:52 PMI use City Car Share. Wheather it is good for you or not does depend on how you use it.
The monthy fee is higher, about $10 a month, and there is a 44ยข per mile fee. But it is only $4 per hour to rent. If you are using it for going to places like Santa Cruz, it adds up, but if you use it for grocieries, and visting friends in the East Bay, it may be well worth it. -

Re: car sharing, anyone?
Thu, September 28, 2006 - 3:13 PMI use Flexcar. I joined up in Seattle about 3 years ago and when I moved back to SF, just added SF to my account as one of the cities I can drive in. In the immediate neighborhood, they have cars over by the Safeway and up at Kezar Stadium. There are cars pretty much all over the City though. In fact, I think all three services share most of their lots. Anyway, Flexcar rates are $9 an hour or $63 a day with unlimited miles and gas is included. They also have a bunch of different pre-set rate plans if you plan on driving a certain amount each month. The membership fee is $50 a year with a $35 application fee. I have been very, very satisfied with Flexcar as a service. I only need to drive like once every 2 or 3 months and their service has been perfect for that.
