I am moving into a place on haight right off fillmore on wednsday. The owner of the condo says she hears gun shots on a regular basis. I am a bit freaked out coming from a smaller city (seattle) and not really having any kind of experiance with gun violence. She mentioned hearing a bunch of shots on saturday night. She also mentioned it has gotten more common for shootings to occur during the day.
Is there anything you all, being that you already live there, can give me about staying safe in that area. All these stories in my brain threaten to turn me into a hermit. At least when i am in that hood. My b.f. lives in the mission x from dolores park and i have never felt unsafe here.
if you have a moment i would love feedback!!!
thanks

Re: shootings in L.H.
Mon, April 30, 2007 - 2:53 PMi've lived in lower haight for 4 years and have never been made to feel unsafe or skittish - the violence is not random, as it seems to generally, unfortunately, be directed at blacks. it's still a great hood, it just has some issues. but the residents are actively involved in neighborhood improvements and discussions, and keeping our culture intact, and getting irate with our supervisor when strings of crime happen, and demanding more cops doing rounds and cameras put up at trouble spots (which both happened).
another tip though, don't wander around after 3am - the neighborhood definitely changes "ownership"

Re: shootings in L.H.
Tue, May 1, 2007 - 11:09 PMThe projects on Haight near Webster are best avoided- that's where the shots are coming from. Not that you need to be terrified of them or anything, but not spending as much time there lowers your risk of showing up when somebody decides to cut loose. Sometimes, however, you just have to go to Two Jacks Seafood, so what can you do?
Seconding "Walk with a purpose." Know who is around you at all times, and if the hair starts standing up on the back of your neck, it's because your instincts are trying to tell you something. Don't be afraid to run like hell if you really get the willies; looking like a fool is better than getting jacked up any day.
Oh, and pepper spray is legal to carry here in CA. Never know when it might come in handy.
Now that you're thoroughly paranoid, rest assured that LH is a cool neighborhood, and likely a lot safer than the Mission, or at least the parts of the Mission a few blocks down from Dolores. Cleaner, too. Bad things can happen to you anywhere, but you don't need to be a hermit, just don't act like a victim.
Did I mention leaving the diamond tiara at home? -

Re: shootings in L.H.
Wed, May 2, 2007 - 2:06 PMthanks, you guys!!
I actually walked from the house on haight to dolores the other day (about 5pm) and it was fine. I was'nt scared, it was sunny out and people were out and about.
I think that i will be living across from the projects (or some form of community housing) it looks all nice though. The owner of my place says that it is mostly some drug dealers that live a couple blocks away form her house that cause most of the problems. It sucks that a few people have to ruin it for a hell of a lot more folks. I guess it is always like that in this land we live in.
I have begun to acccept this as a adventure and a way to grow and be more aware of the things that can happen in the world. I guess my
happy, safe, seattle bubble has been bursted!!! It's good for me!!
Maybe i will see some of you out and about!!
