Re: If you could pick to add to the LH
Mon, February 19, 2007 - 8:53 AMI wouldn't mind a decent italian restaurant or a healthy-type organic place (but not cafe gratitude.....not that I don't like them, just not here).
bookstore, bookstore, bookstore.... -

Re: If you could pick to add to the LH
Mon, February 19, 2007 - 12:36 PMsince the chinese food place (as unexciting as it was) in upper haight is now a pakistani place, I'd love to have a chinese food place in the hood. Red Jade on Church is good, but i'm lazy.
i think a bookstore would be nice too. -
-
Re: If you could pick to add to the LH
Mon, February 19, 2007 - 4:48 PMI agree with you a nice bookstore and a supermarket would be cool.

Re: If you could pick to add to the LH
Wed, February 21, 2007 - 11:56 AMdont you all think another indian food restaurant would be good? lol
i agree with stephanie...a good chinese restaurant like Red Jade or even the bombest little taqueria El Castillito on Church (yeah, its like only 6 blocks from my house but sometimes you just wanna walk 2 blocks maximum)
and yeah, a fucking good bookstore that sells magazines! and not of the playboy variety with mariah carey on the cover. -

Re: If you could pick to add to the LH
Fri, February 23, 2007 - 3:17 PMAll kidding aside, I'd like to import the Thai Noodle house from Shattuck. Not that we don't have good Thai already, but the pumpkin curry is pretty awesome.

Re: If you could pick to add to the LH
Sun, February 25, 2007 - 4:42 PMhow's about a decent taqueria?
they've got 'em in spades in the mission, but here it's a taco-lover's no man's land.
as for a store, yeah. a decent bookstore [used stuff!] would be a wonderful change of scenery from all of the "scene" going on down here.

how's about a decent taqueria?
Mon, February 26, 2007 - 2:13 PMel castilito? they certainly make a tasty burrito. and taco.
also, a little bike-ride away, but i went to papalote on fulton at masonic this weekend - DANG fine burritos there.
-
Re: If you could pick to add to the LH
Mon, February 26, 2007 - 2:51 PMi think Cu Co's makes some of the best burritos in the city. it just supremely sucks (and is baffling) that they're not open on the weekends. -

Re: If you could pick to add to the LH
Tue, February 27, 2007 - 5:29 PMI'd love to have a decent late night diner (or really any cheap sit-down food that isn't pizza) that was opened after bars closed.
As for stores of other types, I'm not really sure, pretty much everything I use regularly that would fit in a small space is already covered. The only thing I could think of is a decent electronics shop, some place that sold parts and tools ala Radio Shak. -
-
Re: If you could pick to add to the LH
Tue, February 27, 2007 - 9:48 PMsparky's @ church and mkt
it's a small town, and a small hood. walkin a few blocks out of it is fine by me. -

Re: If you could pick to add to the LH
Fri, March 2, 2007 - 10:24 PMfor a restaurant, i'd get either eric's from noe valley or eliza's from potrero (chinese, just slightly upscale)
bookstore for sho. i'd swap that chi chi snowboard place for some books in a hot second. how 'bout a second location for Green Apple? they always look like they're busting at the seams over there on Clement...

Re: If you could pick to add to the LH
Sat, March 31, 2007 - 1:51 PMit was a hair/fashion salon (a la Leigh Bowery) the building is on the south side, just east of steiner with the broken mirrored facade - wahumba is how the mirrors got there.
an aside, last I talked to John a few years ago, he was running some artist collective down in the 6th/folsom street area.

Re: If you could pick to add to the LH
Tue, April 10, 2007 - 11:58 AMThis is a good question that I"ve been thinking about a lot lately, and I know it's not the healthiest of fare, but it can be delicious. What the Lower Haight needs is a good fried chicken place, I think about this every time I get the urge for it, which has been a lot the past three Saturdays as I trek over to either one of the two Popeye's that are nearby. Safeway also sells fried chicken, but it's not that good. Popeye's really isn't bad for a chain, but it'd be nice if there was a mom and pop style fried chicken place in the hood. I live right next door to Two Jacks, but I'm just not that into fried fish. Has anyone ever tried their Buffalo chicken? It's probably fried, but also marinated in Buffalo wing style sause I imagine. -

Re: If you could pick to add to the LH
Tue, April 10, 2007 - 12:21 PMthis city in general seems to be terribly lacking in decent soul food. when the craving gets really bad, i just give in and drive to the house of chicken and waffles in oakland. it really is worth it.

Re: If you could pick to add to the LH
Thu, April 19, 2007 - 12:48 PMOh yeah, and in regards to soul food and fried chicken, I forgot about J's Pots of Soul, down on Octavia. I got the fried chicken there for lunch one day, it was good and more than I could eat, had to bring some home. Can't believe I forgot about J's.

Re: If you could pick to add to the LH
Tue, April 10, 2007 - 12:21 PMnot that i have ever been a fan (even as a kid, it grossed me out), but as deep fried franchise fare goes, i've actually heard decent things about those 2 new "Louisiana Fried Chicken" places. (one by Market & 6th. the other on Fillmore right before Geary). of course, ideally, i'm sure i speak for most everyone here by saying that any fast food chain restaurant (or any 'formula retail establishment') would not be at all welcome in the hood.

Re: If you could pick to add to the LH
Tue, April 10, 2007 - 1:27 PMMaybe you can persuade Powell's Chicken, formerly of Hayes Valley, to move into the hood. He's relocated up near fillmore center area. Best soul food around.

Re: If you could pick to add to the LH
Mon, April 16, 2007 - 12:50 PMif you're willing to go as far as the popeye's on divis at hayes, i suggest going a few blocks more to Blue Jay cafe on divis and maybe mcallister? they've got a fried chicken on the menu that's pretty good (better than popeye's IMHO). they have some other 'soul food' on the menu, but i won't venture to rate it overall as a soul food restaurant... -

Re: If you could pick to add to the LH
